The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, Abington, Northampton

The Church of St. Peter & St. Paul in Abington, Northampton, stands only a few yards away from Abington Museum, which we looked at in yesterday’s post. The building is quite beautiful, but its main draw is its Shakespeare connection. You can see the Museum to the left behind the church here:

That’s right, Shakespeare’s granddaughter (through his daughter, Susanna) and last of his line, Lady Elizabeth Nash Bernard was buried in this church in 1670. The Lady had been a staunch Royalist (supporter of Charles I) during the English Civil Wars. To learn more about Elizabeth, and Shakespeare’s other descendants, go to Shakespeare’s Children.

You can see how badly deteriorated the engravings are as a result of the probably tens of thousands (or more) people who have walked over this. You can still see Elizabeth’s name, so that’s good. 2013-08-09 14.49.28The next picture is a view of the interior of the Church, and if you look closely at the wooden pulpit, that was made in the workshop of Grinling Gibbons – master 17th Century woodcarver!2013-08-09 14.51.06Well, I hope you enjoyed the photos and learning a bit more about Shakespeare’s granddaughter, Elizabeth! 🙂
